The Lemonade diet is actually just one part of a larger detox plan called the Master Cleanse. It was originally created by dietitian Stanley Burroughs back in 1941. He wrote a book called “The Master Cleanser” which explained the cleansing process in detail. It is more of a short term detox than a diet. The idea is that you flush out your system of toxins and within a few days, you eliminate waste buildup and toxins, lose weight, increase your energy, and feel much better in many ways.

It has become very popular in recent years especially with celebrities who want to drop a few pounds quite quickly.

What Are The Benefits?

This cleansing of the body provides a whole host of health benefits such as:

  • Purges toxins
  • Clears ‘waste’ buildup
  • Reduces gas and bloating
  • Clears the skin
  • Revitalises hair and nails
  • Provides increased energy
  • Improves concentration

How Does It Work?

These days far more than in the 1940’s when this cleanse was first created, we live in a world full of toxins – fast food, processed food, prescription drugs, chemical fertilizers, and pollution. We ingest all these harmful toxins every day and over time we build up harmful toxins in the body as well as collecting waste material in the colon.

The idea of this lemonade cleanse is that for a 7-10 day period (you can start with as little as 3 days if you prefer) you drink nothing but a lemonade mixture made up of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper (see recipe).  By taking in so little, the body and in particular, the digestive system and essential organs such as the liver have a chance to rest. The body can rid itself of toxins and waste that have built up over a long period of time.

There is also likely to be some dramatic and rapid weight loss though of this I will stress that this is only short term. Most of the weight lost in this period will come from waste elimination and water loss. Whilst there may also be some fat loss, it will not be significant. This lemon detox is not intended to be used for a long time. Some people do it just for a day or two, and others do the full 7-10 day detox on a regular basis to keep themselves healthy.

A few years ago singer Beyonce Knowles, who had been cast in the role of Deena in the movie Dream Girls, lost 20lbs in a short space of time by using the cleanse. In 2006 Beyonce spoke on the Oprah Winfrey show about how she was going to be playing a role much younger than her real age and how she wanted to drop some weight very quickly. This is what Beyonce had to say about her weight loss:

“Normally they’d change your make-up or your clothes, but I wanted to go the extra mile. Back in the sixties, models like Twiggy were popular. I knew Deena would have been thin then, so even though I really love eating, it was necessary to lose weight really fast because we shot Deena at 16 and Deena at 36 two weeks apart.”

Anne Hathaway occasionally does a 48-hour lemonade detox as recommended by David Kirsch. She drinks the lemonade mixture 4 times daily and nothing else for both the days. She did the detox before the Golden Globe Awards in January. His other celebrity clients include Heidi Klum and Liv Tyler.

Who Is It Good For?

I’ll emphasize again that this lemonade regime is a short term fasting-based detox diet; it is not a long term weight loss solution. Therefore it is good for those who wish to lose a relatively small amount of weight in a short time but it is not suitable for those with a large amount of weight to lose. In fact it can be dangerous if you do it for longer than 10 days.

What it is designed for is to cleanse the system, flush out toxins and heal the gut. If you have been feeling sluggish, bloated, overly tired or if you’ve just been feeling under the weather and poorly then this would be a great way to rejuvenate your body.

Bear in mind that it isn’t easy to stick to, especially if you are around food a lot or have to cook for other people. Your energy levels will be lower for a few years so this could affect you if you have a strenuous job, kids to look after and so on.

Lastly, please be aware that any kind of detox regime should not be attempted whilst pregnant or nursing.

Difficulties And What To Expect

Detoxification means elimination; elimination of toxins and of waste. And by waste, I mean, well…poop! I’m trying not to be crass but it’s something to think about. Did you know that our bodies can store up several pounds of waste material in our intestines over the years? This can be eliminated with a detox programme like this. But it’s also a practical consideration to think of. Make sure you have easy access to a toilet during the detox phase! Read our guide so you know exactly what to expect.

Also, another thing to consider is that if you do the detox for a good period of time, such as 7 days or more you will be eliminating many of the substances that you could be unknowingly addicted to – such as sugar and caffeine. People often don’t think of these as addictions but they can be and so can the withdrawal symptoms! Cutting out these addictive substances cold turkey can lead to some nasty headaches. It’s good to prepare yourself ahead of time.

Another consideration is that this is a strict detox system where you consume nothing but the lemonade for the period of time you choose to do it. If you eat food, you simply won’t get the benefits of the detox. Therefore socialising that involves food, eating out, birthdays, holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are simply not the time to try it.

One thing I’d like to point out is that although I am obviously a huge fan of this cleanse, I think it can be abused and done incorrectly and in some cases this can actually cause more harm than good. My aim with Lemonade Wise is to give you the best possible information so you can do the detox correctly and safely for long lasting results.
